The structure near the tree is a pilothouse, it once sat atop the steam tugboat New York Central No. 31 built in 1923 in Brooklyn. The tug was part of a large fleet of such vessels owned and operated by the railroads. The specialized tugboats were employed to jockey the freight barges between rail terminals in New Jersey, Manhattan and Brooklyn. . Around 1970, New York Central No. 31 was sold retired and its pilothouse was purchased by the Seaport Museum. The pilothouse was last restored in 2012. . SeeYourCity
